Applying ColorShield

ColorShield™ is a protective consolidant designed to extend the lifespan of fine art aerosol and acrylic murals. ColorShield™ strengthens paint binder and fuses paint layers to surfaces while maintaining breathability and enhancing the paint’s flexibility. ColorShield™ has the broadest spectrum of UV absorbers to prolong the vibrancy of pigments and actively reduce efflorescence. Since ColorShield™ is a consolidant, it is able to deliver UV protection at the pigment level, surrounding colors from within as well as on top to keep UV rays at bay.

Use ColorShield™ on new murals to extend their life by decades, or on aged murals to recover weathered and faded pigments. Use ColorShield™ on outdoor and indoor murals or artworks as a protective barrier.

ColorShield™ is safe to use and is easily stored in a studio environment. Keep in a cool dark place. Clean up with dish soap and warm water.

Safety First

  • Use close fitting safety goggles or glasses with side shields. Use gloves when handling or spraying. Wear a paint-rated mask when spraying.

Application Process

  • Always test first! Select a small section of the painted wall to test the application and let dry to get the hang of consolidation.
  • The painted surface must be fully dry before consolidation - do not apply ColorShield over wet paint!

NOTE: ColorShield™ is a consolidant, which means that when it is applied over acrylic and aerosol paint, it temporarily rewets and fuses paint layers together. Paints may become temporarily wet, therefore we advise that ColorShield™ is applied in light coats and allowed to dry between applications.

BRUSHING COLORSHIELD

Safety Preparation: Use close fitting safety goggles or glasses with side shields. Use gloves when handling.

TIPS:

  • When brushing, you only need to apply one coat of ColorShield™
  • Apply ColorShield™ in a light to moderate quantity, in even coats–do not apply heavy and do not dilute.
  • ColorShield™ self-levels and dries smooth without brush strokes.
  • When ColorShield is wet, your mural paint is also wet.
  • A little pigment on your brush is normal.

Supplies: A 3” or wider Varnishing Brush such as a Purdy synthetic or similar, a plastic container, safety goggles, gloves, and extra rags for wiping excess off of your brush.

Step 1 and Done: Choose a clean brush suitable for varnishing and pour ColorShield™ into a small plastic container. Begin in the uppermost part of your mural and brush from Top to Bottom, Left to Right, while avoiding going over any previously wet areas. Work quickly and avoid overlapping strokes. Apply with a single stroke and avoid brushing over the same area. ColorShield™ is self leveling, so avoid smoothing out brush strokes. If drips appear, carefully and lightly brush them away.

If the surface feels like it resists your brushstrokes and your brush drags, then ColorShield has begun to cure–Do not continue to brush the area that is curing. Continue working on the next section until your entire mural is coated. ColorShield™ will fully cure within 2-5 hours, or until hardened. Cure time depends on weather conditions and can take up to 24 hours to fully develop. Heat, humidity, and wind help accelerate cure time.

SPRAYING COLORSHIELD

Safety Preparation: Use close fitting safety goggles or glasses with side shields. Use gloves when handling or spraying. Wear a paint-rated mask when spraying.

TIPS:

  • Spray 2-3 even moderate coats of ColorShield
  • Use a Spray Tip for Stains and Sealers such as a 411 Graco Tip
  • Do not dilute
  • Small drips will level out but larger drips can be brushed away with a chip brush

Before Beginning: Make sure your spray equipment is clean and free of paint. When spraying, reduce your sprayer’s power to avoid creating too much overspray. We recommend using an airless or hvlp sprayer and applying light coats.

Step 1: Apply the first coat of ColorShield™ by lightly spraying from side to side, overlapping each row to ensure an even application. The first coat should go on lightly like a fog coat, to give the paint time to adjust as the consolidant begins to work. Allow the surface to slightly dry before applying another coat, approximately 15-20 minutes.

Step 2: Using the same technique, repeat a second coating of ColorShield Paint Preserver™, allowing 15-20 minutes between each coat. Note that if a mural is large enough, you may not need to wait between coats. A third light coat is optional. Coating layers can be applied consecutively.

Dry Time: Full cure is achieved within 12-24 hours. ColorShield™ should not be applied under rainy or wet conditions, or when the wall is moist.

Using OverCoat over ColorShield: To protect your painted wall from unwanted overpainting, tagging, and buffing, apply OverCoat Semi-Sacrificial Paint Protector™ after a complete application of ColorShield™. If spraying the coatings, a full cure of ColorShield is not required in order to apply OverCoat. If spraying OverCoat, proceed to do so. If rolling or brushing OverCoat over ColorShield, allow ColorShield to dry.

Compatibility

ColorShield™ is compatible with artist-grade acrylic paints, fine art aerosols, water-based and hybrid house paints, mixed media, collage-based, or digitally printed murals. While we do our best to thoroughly test over all public art media, ALWAYS TEST BEFORE APPLYING! Compatible substrates include building structures such as uncoated concrete, wood and signage grade panels, exterior insulated finishing systems (EIFS) and stuccos, CMU block walls, brick walls (as long as it is not spalling), architectural metals, exterior grade wood surfaces, canvases and marouflaged textiles, panels, and painted and coated surfaces.

Coverage

1 Gallon of ColorShield™ covers 300 square feet when applied in two coats. Coverage may vary based on surface.
