Applying OverCoat
OverCoat™ is a semi-sacrificial coating that allows artists and building owners the ability to remove unwanted tagging or buffing from mural surfaces without affecting the protective layers beneath.
Equipment
- Sprayer
- Safety Goggles
- Paint-Rated Mask
- Gloves
Safety
Use close fitting safety goggles or glasses with side shields. Use gloves when handling or spraying. Wear a paint-rated mask when spraying.
Application Process
- Make sure your spray equipment is clean and free of paint.
- Before proceeding to applying OverCoat™, ensure ColorShield™ is thoroughly dry (See guide for applying ColorShield here). The surface should feel tough and dry. If it is sticky, allow more time to dry. For indoor murals, OverCoat™ can be applied without ColorShield™.
- Shake your gallon of OverCoat™ before applying. Spray or brush on OverCoat™. Allow each layer to dry before proceeding to the next coat.
- Apply 2 to 3 coats of OverCoat™. Usually dries within 15-45 minutes depending on the weather.
- Some rollers produce microbubbles, so if you decide to roll on OverCoat™, use a tight knit roller designed for varnish or thin coat applications. Ask your local paint store for more information on appropriate rollers.
Modifying a Mural Protected with ColorShield and OverCoat
If you would like to paint into your previously protected mural, use MuralWash™ to remove OverCoat™ in the area that will be modified. Rinse with plenty of water. Allow the area to dry. Proceed with painting and allow the new area to completely dry. Apply 2 coats of ColorShield™ over the newly painted area. Allow to dry, followed by 2 coats of OverCoat™.
Coverage
1 Gallon of OverCoat Semi-Sacrificial Paint Protector™ will cover 300 square feet with two to three coats. Apply extra coats if tagging or buffing occurs regularly. Coverage may vary based on the surface.
